AG, Washington County attorney to review shooting by St. Paul officer
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison and Washington County Attorney Pete Orput will jointly review a shooting by a St. Paul police officer, the attorney general’s office said Friday.
The announcement comes after Ramsey County Attorney John Choi referred the case to them to avoid any perception of conflict of interest.
BCA: St. Paul police shoots man in North End neighborhood; no officers injured
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is still investigating the incident. Ellison and Orput will review the case after the BCA has finished its investigation and determine whether charges are necessary.
"I have every confidence that the Attorney General and Washington County Attorney will handle this case with the utmost integrity. I am grateful for their willingness to step forward and advance the interests of justice in how prosecutors handle officer-involved shooting incidents in Minnesota," Choi said.
The shooting happened at around 9:15 p.m. on Nov. 28 in the 1000 block of Rice Street. Officers had been looking for the man connected to a domestic incident and vehicle crash that happened over an hour earlier near the intersections of Rice Street and Maryland Avenue West. Officers eventually found him hiding in a dumpster in an alley. The preliminary information gathered from supervisors indicates that officers attempted to talk the man out of the dumpster and deployed PepperBall, a powdered chemical that irritates the eyes and nose in a manner similar to pepper spray. At some point, the man climbed out of the dumpster and ran toward officers. Officers deployed Tasers and a K-9 in an effort to stop him, and one officer shot the man, who was struck at least twice.
