St. Paul fire officials say a victim who was found during a search of a burning apartment Wednesday morning has died.

According to the St. Paul Fire Department, crews responded to a fire at a fourplex around 9:45 a.m. on the 1700 block of Englewood Avenue, in the city’s Midway area. A 911 caller reported black smoke coming from the upper floor.

Firefighters were able to quickly put out the fire and prevent it from spreading, but a victim in need of medical care was found inside. The victim was taken to the hospital, where medics tried to resuscitate them for about 15 minutes. However, the victim was later pronounced deceased.

The department said this is St. Paul’s fourth fire fatality of 2021 and the second in December.

The fire remains under investigation, but officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
