Family, friends honor life of 5-year-old boy shot and killed in North Carolina

Family and friends gathered Thursday night to honor the life of Cannon Hinnant, the 5-year-old boy shot and killed while riding his bike in Wilson, North Carolina, last weekend.

WTVD-TV reports that more than 100 cars filled the funeral home parking lot and nearby places as loved ones and strangers showed up to lift up the family during a tragic time.

Merrill Race, Hinnant’s grandfather, told WTVD "we shouldn’t even be here," expressing his pain and disbelief.

Lee Parker, the boy’s stepfather, told the station, "He meant the world to me, just like all the other kids that are mine I helped raise."

Police arrested 25-year-old Darius Sessoms in connection to the death. He is facing a first-degree murder charge and remains in jail without bond. Police haven’t yet released information on a possible motive.

Family members told WTVD that Cannon was set to start kindergarten this week.
