Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl through the years at KSTP-TV

“For over 43 years, KSTP-TV’s Chief Meteorologist Dave Dahl has been ‘Minnesota’s Weather Authority.’ With his dependable forecasts and always sunny personality, Dave has covered every kind of weather imaginable, from record snowfalls to severe summer storms. He’s always been a favorite of fans every year at the Minnesota State Fair. To those of us who have been privileged enough to work with Dave, he’s been a valued colleague who could always make you smile. As he steps away from the weather maps to enjoy a well-earned retirement, everyone who ever has watched him on 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS over the years has a favorite moment with Dave. But the fact is that every moment watching Dave has been time spent with a great friend.”

‘He’s been a great friend and a real treasure for Minnesota’: Dave Dahl leaves us smiling as he retires

Born and raised in Minnesota, Dave Dahl attended the University of Minnesota and earned his degree in meteorology from Florida State University before returning home and starting with 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS. He joined 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS in 1977 and has been on the air since 1979.

What sparked Dahl’s interest in becoming a meteorologist? He witnessed a tornado when he was a child and was so fascinated by it that he decided to learn everything he could about the weather.

Dahl has received the American Meteorological Society Seal of Approval for television and radio weather broadcasting and was named 1998 Broadcaster of the Year by the Minnesota Broadcaster’s Association.

He also produced a documentary on tornado-chasing for The Weather Channel and a special report on The Discovery Channel for his tornado chase in April 1996.

Join us in thanking him and wishing him a happy retirement!
