No. 7 Benilde-St. Margaret’s too much for No. 2 Orono

The No. 7 (Class 2A) Benilde-St. Margaret’s Red Knights defeated the No. 2 (Class 1A) Orono Spartans 6-1 on Thursday evening at the St. Louis Park Rec Center.

Red Knight senior Lily Mortenson started off the scoring less than four minutes into the game to put Benild up 1-0 with 13:42 left in the first period. She was not done. Later in the first, Mortenson added her second goal to put the Red Knights up 2-0.

In the second period, Orono cut the lead to 2-1 following a goal from freshman forward Zoe Lopez. But, at the end of the second period, Red Knight freshman Kendall Hassler scored to make it a 3-1 game heading into the final period.

The Red Knights took advantage of two Orono penalties to really put the game away. Benilde had a 5-on-3 power play around halfway through the final period. Senior Emma Hoen would score to make it 4-1 Red Knights with 11:59 remaining in the game. Then, just 45 seconds later, senior Mary Zavoral scored to put Benilde up 5-1 with 11:14 left in the game.

To put the last touch on the game, sophomore Sienna Duffy scored to make it a 6-1 final.
