Mendota man dies in in snowmobile crash in Cass County

An 18-year-old man snowmobiling Friday night on Gull Lake died after he crashed into the rocky shoreline of an island, the Cass County Sheriff’s Office said.

According to a crash report, emergency personnel responded to a report of a snowmobile crash with serious injuries around 11:18 p.m. Friday on Gull Lake in the area of Birch Island. Deputies and first responders found a 1997 Arctic Cat snowmobile that had crashed into the northwest sshore of Birch Island.

The victim, an 18-year-old man from Mendota, Minnesota, received CPR from a friend and first responders before being airlifted to a hospital in St. Cloud, the sheriff’s office said. He was later pronounced dead.

The victim’s identity and cause of death will be determined following an autopsy with the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
