At Issue: Sept. 13 — Legislature convenes for special session; new poll shows Biden ahead among Minnesota voters

After a record-setting fourth special legislative session, both sides have a little bit of what they want.

This week on “At Issue,” the DFL-controlled House allowed Gov. Tim Walz, a Democrat, to extend his peacetime emergency powers for another 30 days while the Republican-controlled Senate removed another one of the governor’s cabinet members. Steve Kelley, now the former commerce commissioner, was removed after the Senate voted to reject him The Republican majority was joined by two DFLers.

Meanwhile, a new KSTP/ SurveyUSA poll shows who Minnesotans prefer for president: Democrat Joe Biden leads Republican President Donald Trump by 9 points – with a 5.2% margin of error. Trump, a heavy favorite in northern and western Minnesota, will visit Bemidji on Friday, while Biden, who is clinging to a small lead in southern Minnesota and retains a large lead in the Twin Cities, will also visit the state on Friday.

Our political analysts weigh in on the decision by the House DFL to allow Walz to extend his emergency powers and the Senate’s vote to remove Kelley from his position. Both analysts say today’s decisions will have a lasting impact on Minnesota’s politics.
