MPRB to vote on severing ties with Minneapolis Police Department

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is set to vote on a resolution Wednesday that would change the parks department’s relationship with the Minneapolis Police Department.
According to an item on the board’s agenda for Wednesday night’s meeting, the resolution would cease the use of Minneapolis Police officers to staff park events and stop Park Police from responding to Minneapolis Police Department calls.
The proposed resolution comes as several other organizations have cut off ties with the Minneapolis Police Department following the officer-involved killing of George Floyd on Memorial Day.
The University of Minnesota announced last week it was scaling back its relationship with Minneapolis Police, which includes not contracting with Minneapolis Police officers for security at sporting events. On Tuesday the Minneapolis Board of Education voted unanimously to no longer contract with Minneapolis Police officers as school resource officers.
The MPRB’s meeting is set for 5 p.m. Wednesday and will be livestreamed online.
