A curfew went into effect in Minneapolis at 8 p.m. Thursday, and police have started making arrests.

According to police spokesman John Elder, the Minneapolis Police Department had arrested 30 people for violating curfew by 9:15 p.m. Officers also recovered an illegal firearm.

In a news conference, Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said more than 1,000 law enforcement officers from several agencies, including 250 members of the Minnesota National Guard, are patrolling the Twin Cities on Thursday night to keep the peace.

The curfew was announced following a night of looting and civil unrest Wednesday night in Minneapolis after a rumor falsely stated that a man who died by suicide had been shot by police.

A curfew is also in effect for neighboring St. Paul. Both curfews expire at 6 a.m. Friday.
