9-year-old drowns in Carver Lake in Woodbury

Police say a child drowned Sunday evening in Carver Lake in Woodbury.

According to the Woodbury Public Safety Department, emergency personnel responded to a report of a missing child around 6:10 p.m. at Carver Lake Beach. People at the beach told first responders a 9-year-old child had been missing for an extended period of time and was last seen walking from the water to nearby picnic tables.

Police started to search the water and the surrounding area. After about 15 minutes of looking, a police officer who dived under the water found the child near the swim area boundary.

The child did not have a pulse and was not breathing, and emergency personnel started administering CPR, police said. An ambulance took the child to the hospital, but despite continued life-saving measures, the child did not survive.

Police say there are signs around Carver Lake Beach to warn patrons that no lifeguards are on patrol.

The incident remains under investigation.

This is the third person in the area to die from a water-related incident this weekend following the drowning deaths of a 46-year-old near Marine on St. Croix and an 18-year-old in Waite Park. An unresponsive 2-year-old was also taken to the hospital after being pulled from a pond in Ham Lake on Saturday. The child’s condition remains unknown.
