With Maya Moore in his corner, inmate’s conviction overturned

Minnesota Lynx star Maya Moore missed all of last season and announced earlier this year that she’d miss the upcoming season as she pushes for criminal justice reform and the release of Jonathan Irons.

Irons, who has served 22 years of a 50-year sentence after he was convicted of burglary and assault of a suburban St. Louis homeowner, has Moore’s support, and Moore has said she believes he’s innocent. His attorneys argued there’s no evidence tying Irons to the crime.

They got good news Monday as Judge Daniel Green granted Irons’ petition for a writ of habeas corpus, vacating his assault and burglary convictions, ESPNW reports. The state will have 15 days to request a review by an appellate court, and if the state doesn’t appeal, the county will have 30 days to decide if it will retry Irons.

"It’s a very good day," Irons’ attorney Kent Gipson told ESPNW. "But it’s not quite over yet."

Moore also spoke to Irons after the hearing Monday, telling him, "You’re coming home!. Get your meal order ready."

In an interview with The New York Times in January, Moore said she’s "in a really good place right now with my life, and I don’t want to change anything."
