Vikings’ Mike Zimmer may lose OC Gary Kubiak to retirement

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer might have to start his eighth season by hiring yet another offensive coordinator. Gary Kubiak is strongly considering retirement. Zimmer says he’s letting Kubiak take some time to ponder his future.

"I love Gary Kubiak," Zimmer said. "He’s an unbelievable person, unbelievable coach, a great ear to me. I love sitting there talking to him. We’re both kind of the same kind of guys. I know that he’s had some health issues in the past, so it’s always good to take some time and think about where you’re at, mentally and physically," Zimmer added during his season-ending news conference.

The 59-year-old Kubiak steered clear of both of his opportunities as a head coach with Houston and Denver because of health issues. The Vikings were fourth in the NFL in yards and 11th in points this season. Kubiak was the fifth play-caller in seven years under Zimmer.

"Obviously, this year was a major mental and physical drain on all of us, including the players. We’ll just see how all of that unfolds as we move forward. He’s the best I’ve ever been around, terrific person, great coach, and I love him. We’ll just see how he’s doing. He’s taking some time to mentally think about the season and where he’s at healthwise and he’ll decide what he wants to do," Zimmer said.

Kubiak’s offense was the fourth best in the league with Kirk Cousins racking up 4,265 yards through the air with 35 touchdowns, Dalvin Cook had another strong season with 1,557 yards rushing, including 16 touchdowns, and Justin Jefferson had 1,400 yards receiving including 7 touchdowns. He is a viable candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
