Twins option 2 relievers, reinstate Alcala, add Gibaut

The Minnesota Twins made a few moves Friday, shaking up the bullpen.

The team reinstated pitcher Jorge Alcala from the 10-day Injured List and selected the contract of pitcher Ian Gibaut from Triple-A St. Paul.

Alcala has missed the team’s last 15 games with triceps tendinitis but has gone 3-5 with a 5.11 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 44 innings this season.

Gibaut was claimed off waivers from Texas on Oct. 30, 2020, and has appeared in 27 games for the Saints this season, going 1-3 with a 7.20 ERA in 40 innings. The 27-year-old has appeared in 24 career MLB games with Tampa Bay and Texas.

To make room on the roster for them, the Twins optioned pitchers Kyle Barraclough and Edgar Garcia to St. Paul. Barraclough signed a minor league deal with Minnesota on June 20 and has appeared in three games for the Twins, giving up four runs in 3.1 innings. Garcia was claimed off waivers from Cincinnati on July 30 and has pitched in six games for the Twins, allowing 12 runs in 10.1 innings.

Additionally, the Twins moved pitcher Luke Farrell to the 60-day Injured List. He’s missed the team’s last 54 games with a right oblique strain.
