The Stillwater Area High School girls soccer program graduated 12 seniors from last season’s state title run, but still returns some valuable experience and optimism as defending AAA champions this fall.
The Ponies defeated Centennial 1-0 last November at U.S. Bank Stadium to win a state championship as the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Even though the Ponies graduated 12 seniors off that title team, they have a handful of experienced players returning and believe they could still be a tough team to beat.
“It’s a little nerve-racking because we’ve played with those girls for so long, but it’s exciting to have a fresh team and see what the girls can do,” Ponies’ senior midfielder Luka Johnson.
Fellow senior, outside back Nell Smith said, “I think a lot of the girls trying out now knew there were a lot of spots open, so they’re giving all of their intensity and effort to be part of this team because they want to win a state title too.”
The Ponies open their season on Thursday against Maple Grove. Click here to view Stillwater’s full schedule.
