State Hockey: Mahtmomedi claims first title with OT win over Hermantown

Mahtomedi won their first-ever state hockey championship after defeating Hermantown 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, March 7 at the Xcel Energy Center.

Senior forward Colin Hagstrom scored the game-winning goal for the Zephyrs at 2:44 of overtime.

Teammate junior forward JD Metz had his stick on each of the three Mahtomedi goals scoring the first goal of the game and assisting in the next two.

Zephyrs sophomore goalie Ben Davis had 40 saves in the game, including 22 saves in the third period.

Hermantown’s senior defender Drew Sams and junior forward Aaron Pionk each had a goal in the Class A title game.

At the awards ceremony, Hagstrom was named the recipient of the 2020 Herb Brooks award.

Mahtomedi finished the season 23-8-0. Hermantown finished the season 23-4-4.
