State Boys Hockey: Warroad beats Mahtomedi 5-4 in overtime of Class 1A Semifinals

Matt Hard scored in overtime to lift second-seeded Warroad past No. 3 Mahtomedi 5-4 in the Class 1A Semifinals of the Boys State Hockey Tournament Friday afternoon at Xcel Energy Center.

Warroad rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the second period. Daimon Gardner had a hat trick for the Warriors and Jayson Shaugabay scored the game-tying goal for Warroad in the second period and also had three assists.

Mahtomedi was led by Charlie Drage and Brent Guienchyn who each scored two goals for the Zephyrs. Ben Dardis made some incredible stops in net for Mahtomedi and finished with 30 saves.

Warroad will face the winner of Hermantown-Alexandria in Saturday’s Class 1A title game. The Warriors are in search of their fifth state championship.
