St. Thomas women’s hockey earns first Division 1 win

The University of St. Thomas Tommies women’s hockey team defeated the Bemidiji State Beavers 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Saint Thomas Ice Arena.

The Beavers jumped out a 1-0 lead just 1:19 into the game when sophomore forward Gabbie Smith scored for Bemidji State.
In the second period, the Tommies answered when junior forward Maija Almich scored off a rebound to make it 1-1 with 12:54 left in the second period.
Still a tie game into the third period when Tommie freshman Abby Promersberger assisted junior forward Luci Bianchi for the go-ahead goal to make it 2-1 St. Thomas with 6:54 left in the game.
Bemidji State had a power play the final 1:01 of the game, but Tommie freshman goaltender Saskia Maurer held strong and gave St. Thomas their first victory as a Division 1 women’s hockey program.
