Unbeaten Gonzaga is No. 1 in college basketball and a big reason why is St. Paul native and former Minnehaha Academy star guard Jalen Suggs.

We caught up with Jalen’s dad, Larry Suggs, to hear how proud he is. Jalen led Minnehaha Academy to three consecutive state titles and was poised to help them win a 4th last March. But the boys state tourney was canceled due to the pandemic.

Earlier this week, Suggs was among new names added to the midseason watch list for the 2021 Wooden Award, which is given to the nation’s most oustanding collegiate player.

The 6-foot-4 Suggs leads the top-ranked Bulldogs (12-0) in assists (5.3 APG) and steals (2.6 SPG).

Suggs is averaging 14.1 points per game and had big games against ranked Kansas (24 points) and Iowa (27). Those two performances have helped vault him to the top of NBA Draft boards. He’s considered a top-5 2021 draft pick, if he chooses to declare.
