Q&A: John Harris on calling it a golf career after this week’s Sanford International

John Harris, 68, is one of the best golfers Minnesota has ever produced. After playing in this week’s Sanford International in Sioux Falls, the Champions Tour stop, he’s retiring from competitive golf.
We talked to John about why now is the right time to walk away, plus had him go down memory lane.

Harris has played in the Masters, U.S. Open, and Open Championship, and has helped the U.S. win the Walker Cup.

He beat a young Tiger Woods in 1993 for the U.S. Amateur title and won the Commerce Bank Championship in 2006, his first trophy on the over-50 tour.
Harris played golf and hockey at the University of Minnesota, and later was the director of golf at his alma mater. He helped the Herb Brooks-led Gophers win a hockey championship in 1974.
Twin Cities resident Rocco Mediate won the Sanford International title last year.
