Q&A: European scout on new Timberwolves Leandro Bolmaro and Jaden McDaniels

Jason Filippi of Babcock Hoops is a former scout for the Pistons and Blazers. Based in Italy, he knows new Timberwolves guard Leandro Bolmaro well. He has seen him play in person five times.

Our Darren ‘Doogie’ Wolfson talked to Filippi about Bolmaro and their acquisition at pick No. 28, Washington’s Jaden McDaniels.

The Wolves treached an agreement with the New York Knicks, the person told the Associated Press, to send the No. 25 and No. 33 overall picks to New York in exchange for the No. 23 selection. The person confirmed the deals to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trades had not yet been announced. Once they’re finalized, Minnesota will net Argentine guard Leandro Bolmaro (No. 23) and Washington power forward Jaden McDaniels (No. 28).

A source told KSTP’s Wolfson that McDaniels was in play for Minnesota had they retained pick No. 17.

McDaniels played in 27 games for Washington, starting 20. He averaged 13.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.4 blocks in 31.1 minutes per game. But he also averaged 2.2 turnovers, led the Pac-12 in personal fouls and was called for six technical fouls.

One of his best performances came in the Huskies’ victory at Arizona in the regular-season finale. He scored 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the field and addd six rebounds and three blocks.

Bolmaro, 20, is a 6’7" combo guard who played for FC Barcelona last season, though he only averaged 11.6 MPG in 16 games. He’s expected to remain with Barcelona this year, per Filippi.
