Former Eden Prairie HS DB Benny Sapp III announced that he’s leaving the Gophers to play for Northern Iowa.

He talked to KSTP Sports about the decision, and more. Sapp III hopes to be able to play for Northern Iowa when their season starts early next year. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the school pushed back its fall season.

Sapp III is the son of Benny Sapp, who played part of his college career at Northern Iowa. He later went on to play in the NFL for the Vikings, Chiefs, and Dolphins.

After appearing in 24 games the last two seasons for the Gophers, mostly on special teams, Sapp III was hoping to win a starting safety spot. But sophomore Tyler Nubin and junior Jordan Howden occupy those jobs. Sapp III didn’t play in the loss to Michigan, one that saw the defense shredded. He then announced his intentions to transfer a few days later.
