Bump scored five goals, including a pure hat trick in the first period, to power the unseeded Lakers to a 6-0 upset victory over No. 2 Cretin-Derham Hall in the Class AA quarterfinals of the Minnesota State High School League’s Boys Hockey State Tournament on Thursday, March 10, 2022, at the Xcel Energy Center. Bump’s offensive outburst was two short of the individual game record for a state tournament set by Eveleth’s John Mayasich in 1951.

Bump’s mark equaled the five-goal output by Grant Besse of Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the 2012 Class AA championship game.

Bump and the Lakers (19-10-0) left little doubt of their intent to leave an impression in the program’s first-ever state tournament appearance with a goal just more than two minutes into regulation time. For good measure, he added his second goal about 90 seconds later and then another late in the first period for a 3-0 lead at the first intermission.

After a scoreless second period, senior center Sam Rice bumped Prior Lake’s lead to four goals with a tally five minutes into the third period. Bump then struck again with two more that left little doubt that Prior Lake was going to advance to the big-school semifinals on Friday against the winner between Edina and Maple Grove.

Prior Lake senior goal Trevor Boschee made 22 saves to preserve the shutout. Cretin-Derham Hall (24-4-0), making its first state tournament appearance since 2009, moves to the consolation side of the Class AA bracket on Friday at 3M Arena at Mariucci and faces the loser between Edina and Maple Grove.
