NSIC cancels fall sports

Thursday, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced it would cancel fall sports due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move comes after the NCAA directed conference to meet certain requirement to have fall sports, as well as the NCAA Division II Presidents Council’s announcement that fall championships would be postponed.

The conference, which includes nine Minnesota schools, said the recommendations for testing, exposure and quarantine make it difficult to have a successful season.

NSIC delays start of fall sports season due to COVID-19

"Our student-athletes deserve a competitive experience that provides a greater degree of safety and certainty than current conditions would allow," NSIC Commissioner Erin Lind said. "We believe now is the right time to provide clarity to our student-athletes so we can turn our efforts towards helping institutions reopen and ensuring a safe return to campus to start the academic year."

The conference said it would consider looking into opportunities for those involved in fall athletics to compete in the spring.
