MSHSL approves fall season for football, volleyball

The Minnesota State High School League on Monday approved a fall season for football and volleyball.

Inside Monticello High School, there’s an electricity in the air at volleyball practice.

"We’re just thrilled to be able to compete again and be a team and have some motivation for what we’re working toward, so its great to be back," said Monticello High School Volleyball coach Beth Modaff.

Being out on the field on this Monday after school has a different feel for these athletes.

Senior football captain Sam Valor was in class when he found out his team, and his volleyball classmates, will get to play this fall after all.

"It just feels good to be back out here in football weather, after practice to get food with the guys, it just feels like the most normal thing that we’ve had in quite awhile," Valor said.

With safety protocals in place the teams will officially start practice September 28th.

Coach Jason Telecky is excited for the opportunity and says his team is staying COVID-19 aware.

"When we talk about it, we say you have control over how long the season lasts, they’ve given us the green light, that will be my message today, you’re going to determine how long it lasts," Telecky explains.

Monticello’s Activities Director is also a Minnesota State High School Leage board member, who voted in favor of resuming these fall sports, saying the vote will impact every student athlete this year.

"There’s no way we are going to have consensus on this and 100% approval from everyone, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and we just had to do what we thought was best for the state of Minnesota," he said.

The 11-week volleyball season will begin on Sept. 28.

The 10-week football season will also begin Sept. 28, with six regular season games. The postseason is yet to be determined, the MSHSL reported Monday.

The MSHSL Board of Directors approved the moves during a special meeting Monday morning.
