MNUFC2 to join MLS NEXT Pro

Monday, Minnesota United and Major League Soccer announced MNUFC2 as one of the 21 clubs that will play in the new professional league’s inaugural 2022 season.

It’s the first professional-level developmental squad for Minnesota United.

The league will allow players the opportunity to develop and showcase their talents while competing for the MLS NEXT Pro championship.

Former Minnesota United video analyst Cameron Knowles, who was a coach with the Portland Timbers for nine years before joining Minnesota, will coach MNUFC2.

"We are very excited to be a part of the inaugural season of MLS NEXT Pro and applaud the league for creating a project that connects youth soccer with the first team," MNUFC Chief Soccer Officer Manny Lagos said in a statement. "Today’s announcement will have an impact in youth soccer in the state of Minnesota and it provides an opportunity for this club to expand how we develop young players for the first team. We are lucky to have someone as experienced and knowledgeable as Cam Knowles leading this group. He has a great relationship with Adrian Heath and his staff, and we’re looking forward to his leadership with this team."

Minnesota United will hold a multi-day combine from Jan. 5-7 to help with recruitment for MNUFC2.
