Grace Sadura’s power play goal with 37 seconds remaining in overtime gave the Minnetonka girls hockey team a 3-2 win over Holy Family in the Section 2AA championship game Friday night.
Two of the best teams in the state went back-and-forth all night. Minnetonka took an early 1-0 lead thanks to Lauren Goldsworthy who scored in the first period.
A defensive second period by both teams set up plenty of drama in the third period. Holy Family tied the game at 1-1 on a Shae Messner goal. Minnetonka quickly regained the lead with a Josie Hemp goal 39 seconds later. With the Skippers leading late in the third period, Holy Family’s Josie Linn tied the game at 2-2.
Sadura’s 21st goal of the year was the biggest as the overtime game-winner sent the Skippers back to the Girls’ State Hockey Tournament for the third year in a row.
Minnetonka goalie Sophia Johnson stopped 28 of the 30 shots she faced.
Brackets for the state tournament will be unveiled on Sunday.
