MIAC postpones seasons for several fall sports to spring

Tuesday, the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) announced it will postpone several fall sports to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The affected sports include football, volleyball, cross country and soccer.

The MIAC said it is working to develop spring schedules for the sports, which have been deemed medium or high-risk by the NCAA.

According to the conference, men’s and women’s golf and tennis, which are considered low-risk sports, will be allowed to compete against conference opponents only during the fall.

"Our number one priority is the health and safety of students and staff," said Paul Pribbenow, Chair of the MIAC Presidents’ Council and Augsburg University President. "The decision to postpone competition for many of our fall sports was very difficult, as we know how much our student-athletes want to compete and how important athletics are to each of our campuses, but we need to put ourselves in a position to return to play as safely as possible."

The MIAC said it is continuing to evaluate options for the upcoming winter season and beyond.
