Led by future Gopher Spencer Alvarez, Columbia Heights football 2-0
Led by Gophers 2022 commitment Spencer Alvarez, the Columbia Heights football team is off to a 2-0 start, with wins over Minneapolis South and Harding-Humboldt.
We stopped by practice recently to speak with Alvarez and coach Matt Townsend.

After tearing his ACL last winter in a football game, Alvarez is cleared to play. But admittedly, he’s not yet 100 percent. P.J. Fleck and the Gophers’ staff saw potential in Alvarez after watching video of him playing basketball. At 6-feet-7, he moves incredibly well.
Columbia Heights is among the top teams in Class 4A, and will play Friday at Spectrum.

Alvarez, a tight end and defensive end, committed to the Gophers earlier this summer. He’s expected to play tight end in college.
