Ibrahim chosen as Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week
After running for a career-high 263 yards and a touchdown on Saturday, University of Minnesota running back Mohamed Ibrahim has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.
Ibrahim carried the ball 39 times Saturday against Iowa in the Gophers’ 13-10 loss, running for the most yards in the country last week and the fourth-most in program history. It was also the most rushing yards allowed by Iowa since Northern Illinois’ Leshon Johnson’s 306 yards in 1993.
It marks the second time Ibrahim has earned the conference’s weekly honor in his career.
The senior has played in 10 games this year and leads the country in rushing touchdowns (19) and rushing yards per game (152.4). He’s second in the nation in total rushing yards (1,524).
Saturday also marked Ibrahim’s 19th consecutive game with at least 100 rushing yards, the longest streak by any FBS player since 2000. He’s also run for a touchdown in 11 straight games.
With his performance against Iowa, Ibrahim set the program’s single-season rushing touchdown record, passing Gary Russell’s 18 in 2005. He also tied Russell for the program’s single-season total touchdown record and points scored mark (114). Additionally, he passed Darrell Thompson’s career record for 100-yard rushing games with his 24th.
Ibrahim currently ranks second all-time in school history for rushing yards in a single season, trailing only David Cobb’s 1,626 yards in 2014, which he can break with 103 yards on Saturday against Wisconsin. He can also break Thompson’s career rushing yards record with 128 yards against the Badgers, and he’s on pace to break Laurence Maroney’s school record of 109.3 career rushing yards per game, as Ibrahim currently is averaging 116.1 yards per game.
Minnesota plays at Wisconsin at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
