Gopher heavyweight wrestler Gable Steveson’s goal of winning an NCAA championship in Minneapolis was stopped short when the NCAA canceled all of their championships due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Steveson was 15-0 and would have entered the tournament as the number-one seed.
"I felt this was my year to get it," the Gophers sophomore told Darren Wolfson. "I felt that way the whole season. This year meant a lot because it was at U.S. Bank Stadium."
Steveson, a four-time state champion at Apple Valley, should get a couple more shots at an NCAA championship and he also wants to represent the United States at the 2021 Olympics.
Once his amatuer career is over, Steveson is eyeing a career in professional wrestling. He has the unique opportunity to learn from one of the top WWE superstars of all-time – former Gopher NCAA championship – Brock Lesnar.
"Over the past year we have gained a friendship and it’s going to continue to grow," Steveson said of Lesnar. "I’m following in his footsteps and hopefully I can reign in the WWE just like him."
