Former Maple Grove high school tight end/fullback Sam Renner walked on with the Gophers in 2015. He eventually earned a scholarship after moving to the defensive line, and is now in a position to make money playing the game he loves.

We caught up with Renner at a recent training session, under the watchful eye of Bill Welle.

Renner has overcome two serious knee injuries in his career, which shows the sort of dedication he has. He was disruptive for the Gophers in 2019, starting all 13 games. He recorded 43 tackles (24 solo), 8.5 tackles for loss and had a team leading five sacks. He also broke up four passes.

Renner says he can benefit an NFL team since he can play defensive tackle and defensive end.
