Boreen scores twice in Gophers 5-1 win over Minnesota State
The No. 3 Golden Gopher women’s hockey team blew open a one-goal game with three goals in a 1:18 span of the third period to earn a 5-1 win over Minnesota State on the road at the Mayo Clinic Health System Event Center in Mankato, Minn., on Thursday night.
Minnesota (4-1-0, 4-1-0 WCHA) was led by Abigail Boreen’s first-career two-goal game and a pair of assists from Crystalyn Hengler. Olivia Knowles, Grace Zumwinkle, and Taylor Heise also scored for the Maroon & Gold.
The Gophers took a 1-0 lead into the third period on a first-period tally from Boreen before Knowles doubled the Gophers’ lead with a power-play goal at the 2:21 mark of the third period. Minnesota State (1-4-0, 1-4-0 WCHA) responded with a goal by Sydney Langseth, but the Gophers cruised to the win with three quick, unanswered goals from Boreen, Zumwinkle, and Heise.
Lauren Bench made a season-high 40 saves for Minnesota while Minnesota State got 23 saves from Lauren Barbro in net. The Mavericks had the advantage in shots on goal, 41-28, marking the third time the Gophers have been outshot this season.
