6A’s "Cinderella" St Michael Albertville prepares to face #1 Lakeville South in State Semi

The players on this year’s St Michael-Albertville football team were grade-schoolers when they watched their predecessors play for a State Championship back in 2015. Despite finishing the regular season 4-4, it’s a memory they are one game away from experiencing for themselves.

The Knights face Lakeville South in the Class 6A State Semifinals on Friday night. The winner advances to next week’s Prep Bowl.
The Knights have run off three straight playoff wins since closing the regular season as a .500 team. They hops their 11th overall appearance in the State Tournament can deliver their third Prep Bowl appearance – the lone Championship coming in 2015.
For their part, Lakeville South is the odds-on favorite. After closing out the COVID-shortened 2020 season 8-0 and ranked #1, they’ve duplicated the feat in 2021. The Cougars were the only 6A team to have a perfect regular season and 11-0 heading into the semifinals.

The Cougars have won 19 straight since a 28-14 defeat to Wayzata in the 2019 State 6A Semifinals.
STMA and Lakeville South play at 7pm on Friday in the Class 6A Semifinals. The winner faces Maple Grove next Friday for the 6A title.
