2 Gophers starters named All-Americans by FWAA
The University of Minnesota football team had two players named All-Americans Friday by the Football Writers Association of America.
Center John Michael Schmitz was a First-Team selection while running back Mohamed Ibrahim was named to the Second-Team.
Their selections make them the 23rd and 24th Gophers to be named to an FWAA All-America team.
Additionally, Schmitz is the first Gophers center to receive the honor by the FWAA since Greg Eslinger in 2005 while Ibrahim is the first Gophers running back recognized by the FWAA since Bob McNamara in 1954.
The last Gopher honored by the FWAA before Schmitz and Ibrahim was Antoine Winfield, Jr. in 2019, and Maxx Williams was the last offensive player recognized back in 2014.
Schmitz and Ibrahim were both named Second Team All-Americans by the Walter Camp Foundation and will be considered by the Associated Press, which will announce its All-America teams on Monday.
