Andover had earned the #1-seed in their first appearance at the State Tournament.
The unseeded Cadets were carried down the stretch by goalie Tommy Aitken, who weathered a furious storm turning aside 33 Andover shots – 15 in the third period.
After Andover’s Hunter Jones scored 30-seconds into the second period to give his Huskies a 2-1 lead, STA goals by Will Soderling and Jarod Wright 1:42 apart vaulted the Cadets into the lead at 3-2.
Aitken’s efforts made the tenuous 3-2 lead hold up.
St Thomas Academy advances to the Class AA Semifinal, Friday night at 8pm. They’ll face the winner of the last AA quarterfinal between Moorhead and Hill-Murray.
