MSHSL votes to add 35-second shot clock to varsity basketball

The Minnesota State High School League board unanimously voted Thursday to add a 35-second shot clock for boys and girls varsity basketball.
The change will go into effect for the 2023-24 season. It is only mandated for varsity games.

According to tweets from one of the MSHSL media specialists attending the board meeting today, feedback from a survey to MSHSL member schools about shot clocks revealed that 18% of schools already have them, 26% say they could have them in place by the 2022-23 season and 31% say they could have them installed by 2023-24 season.
Additionally, there was a concern from 67% of schools about finding and training shot clock operators, as well as other costs related to shot clocks.

Also discussed during the meeting is that the majority of the current season state tournaments will happen at Williams Arena at the University of Minnesota due to availability conflicts with Target Center.
