Zebra mussels, faucet snails found in Crow Wing County lakes

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has confirmed the presence of aquatic invasive species in Crow Wing County lakes.

The county on Thursday confirmed that zebra mussels were found in Horseshoe and Lower South Long lakes. Additionally, faucet snails were also found in Lower South Long Lake.

Zebra mussels were found by a county watercraft inspector at the Horseshoe Lake public access. DNR specialists later confirmed their presence in a follow-up search.

Authorities urge Minnesotans to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species by:

• Draining water from boats, motors, live wells, bilges and bait buckets before leaving the lake.
• Removing plants, mud and other debris from boats, trailers, fishing lines and downrigger cables.
• Letting docks and lifts dry completely before moving them from one body of water to another. The recommended wait time between moves is at least five days for boats and gear or 21 days for lifts and docks.
• Disposing of unwanted live bait, worms and fish in the trash. Unless it came from the water, don’t put it in there.
