Some Twin Cities residents are waiting weeks to get their air conditioners fixed during this heat wave.

Laura Itman from Golden Valley is one of them.

"I don’t know what I am going to do these next few days. It’s just going to get hotter and hotter," Itman said.

Her air conditioner quit on her last week, and she says she has to wait until June 16 for a service call. Itman says she is a CenterPoint Energy customer and has had the Service Plus Plan since 1967.

"I need them to come out today. I needed them to come out yesterday," she said. "This is killing me."

In a written statement regarding current wait times, the company said, "The extreme heat wave is causing extreme demand for A/C service and repairs."

Xcel Energy is also reporting an increase in demand for services.

"We understand how frustrating it is for customers to have to wait for service during the extreme heat…We are working to get to customers as quickly as possible," the company said in a statement.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS called a sample of service providers throughout the metro to inquire about wait times. Wait times ranged from one day to three weeks.

If your air conditioning isn’t working properly or at all, CenterPoint Energy recommends the following tips before calling for service:

  • Check to make sure the filter is clean.
  • Make sure the metal fins on the outside of the condenser coil are free of obstruction like bushes and other outside debris.
  • Make sure your circuit breaker is on.
  • Check your wall thermostat for fresh batteries.
