Police investigating possible arson at Maplewood playground, no injuries reported

The Maplewood Police Department is investigating a possible arson incident committed on a playground.

According to police, at about 11:48 p.m. on Friday, Maplewood Public Safety responded to Gethsemane Park on a report that the playground equipment was on fire. The Maplewood Fire Department put the fire out, and there were no reported injuries.

Two juveniles were seen running from the park at the time of the fire. However, no description of the juveniles was given. The fire caused extensive damage to the main play structure.

A preliminary investigation suggests the incident may have been the result of arson, authorities said.

Police detectives and fire investigators are actively working on the case. The city of Maplewood is working with the League of Minnesota Cities Insurance Trust to replace the playground.
