In their grand reopening, the Midtown Global Market welcomed back a community that’s still working to rebuild their neighborhood.

With live cultural music, fresh food and smells, and hundreds of dollars in gift certificates, organizers wanted the spirit of the market to be felt by all who attended.

"There’s a lot of businesses in here that depend on people coming to the market. The market can’t survive without customers," said Renay Dossman, executive director of the Neighborhood Development Center.

The Midtown Global Market is co-owned by the Neighborhood Development Center and the Cultural Wellness Center. Featuring more than 30 restaurants, grocery stores, gift shops and other retailers with items from all over the world, the market has become a staple in the south Minneapolis and East Lake Street neighborhood.

Saturday’s event was free and represented a fresh start for the market. Social distancing was encouraged, masks were required and people had their temperatures checked as organizers worked to reopen safely.

Dossman says to follow its social media for special offers and more pop-up events like this one.
