Bail set for driver charged in Edina hit-and-run that injured high school student

The man charged in connection to a hit-and-run that injured a teenager in Edina made his first court appearance Friday.

The Hennepin County Attorney's Office said 26-year-old Carlton Duke Troutman, of Flint, Michigan, had his bail set at $300,000.

He was arrested and charged with second-degree assault earlier this month and extradited from Michigan.

According to a criminal complaint, at about 8 a.m. on Jan. 23, Troutman took his friend's car, along with two other passengers, and began driving aggressively. Around 8:10 a.m., the vehicle struck 17-year-old Kyla Avant while she was boarding a school bus at France and Halifax avenues in Edina.

Police said Troutman was driving the car around the bus on the right shoulder of the road, partially on the sidewalk, when he struck Avant. According to a criminal complaint, the student forcefully hit the windshield and was thrown 50 feet as Troutman sped away from the site of the crash.

Both passengers later told police Troutman was the one driving when the hit-and-run occurred.

Avant was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Troutman's next court appearance is set for April 22.
