Boating Safety

Will you be spending your weekend on a lake? State officials want boaters to keep safety on their minds as they head out.

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reports the two most common causes of boating fatalities in the state are capsizing and falling overboard.

Boaters are asked to follow these tips:

  • Wear a life jacket
  • Distribute weight evenly in the boat and abide by the boat’s weight limits
  • Have a way to communicate; boaters should let others know where they are going and when they plan to return
  • Watch weather reports to avoid shifting winds or storms.

You can get information from the DNR on life jacket requirements, boating laws and regulations, boat and water safety education, and lake and river restrictions. Click here to check out the DNR’s Boat and Water Safety page.
