Portion of Hwy 61 in St. Paul temporarily closed after fatal crash

A portion of northbound Highway 61 in St. Paul closed after a fatal crash Friday.

KSTP Traffic Reporter Josie Smith said the crash happened along the highway near Lower Afton Road.

The state patrol’s crash report states a GMC was speeding, traveling northbound on Highway 61 when the driver ran a red light at Lower Afton Road and hit a Ford Escape turning eastbound from southbound Highway 61.

The driver of the GMC, 45-year-old Oliver Watkins, from St. Paul, died in the crash. He was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The driver of the Ford Escape, 61-year-old Pamela Ann Paul, from St. Paul, was not injured in the crash.

The Minnesota State Patrol said they are investigating the fatal crash.
