Pedestrian hit, killed in Minneapolis; Hiawatha Ave. reopens

A pedestrian was hit and killed in a crash in Minneapolis Wednesday.

The incident happened in the area of Hiawatha Avenue and East 26th Street at about 3:10 a.m.

According to police, a man in his 20s was driving the vehicle that hit the male pedestrian in his 50s as the pedestrian was crossing Hiawatha Avenue.

The pedestrian was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Police said the driver stopped and tried to help the pedestrian. The driver is cooperating with the investigation and there is no indication the driver was impaired at the time of the crash, police added.

Police reopened Hiawatha Avenue just before 5:30 a.m.

The pedestrian’s identity has not yet been released, pending confirmation by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
