MnDOT plans for weekend closures on I-35W, I-494 south of Minneapolis

As the weather warms up, construction projects are ramping up.

Drivers will experience a number of weekend closures on major roads all around the Twin Cities from Friday to Monday.

South of Minneapolis, I-35W southbound will be closed from Interstate 94 to 46th Street from Friday at 10 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m.

The closure is due to pavement repairs, the northbound lanes will still be open. A detour route is in place using westbound I-94, westbound I-394, southbound Highway 100 and eastbound Highway 62/Crosstown.

The following ramps will also be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday:

  • I-35W southbound ramps from Washington Avenue and East Fourth Street
  • Highway 65 (downtown Minneapolis) ramp to southbound I-35W
  • I-94 to southbound I-35W
  • 31st Street to southbound I-35W
  • 36th Street to southbound I-35W

I-494 will also be closed this upcoming weekend in the Mendota Heights area.

All eastbound I-494 lanes will close between Highway 5 in Bloomington to I-35E in Mendota Heights. All westbound I-494 lanes will close between I-35E and Pilot Knob Road.

The closure will happen from 9 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday. A detour route will be in place using Cedar Ave./Highway 77 and I-35E.

The closure is part of the Highway 55 bridge deck preservation project.

The closures are weather permitting. According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), there will be access to all businesses and residences though you may need to use a different route.
