Highway 5 near MSP Airport reopens Friday morning
We’re seeing more and more signs that the 2020 construction season is coming to a close.
Friday morning, Highway 5 westbound by the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport reopened between Highway 55 and Interstate 494.
The resurfacing project kicked off in April, when crews shut down the eastbound lanes for several months, before shifting the work to the westbound side.
The $26 million project included replacing concrete, plus making repairs to bridges and ramps along the two-mile stretch.
"It’s been going pretty well," Dave Aeikens, with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), said. "There have been very little complaints about it."
Early on, MnDOT was concerned about the type of impact this project would have on drivers traveling to and from the airport. But with the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been pretty minimal.
Meanwhile, we’re still waiting for a couple of other big projects to wrap up for the season, including I-94 from Rogers to Maple Grove and I-35W between Roseville and Lino Lakes.
Drivers should see both those projects shift to a more normal configuration for the winter next week.
