While we all know that there’s been a lot less traffic on the roads, construction crews are still out in full force around the metro. According to Dave Aeikens, spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, Highway 5 will close starting Wednesday morning until the middle of July.
"Right now, if you drive on it, you’ll notice it’s a little bumpy, you can see in some spots, it looks like it’s ready for some work," said Aeikens.
During the closure, Highway 5 will be resurfaced and repairs will be made to 12 bridges and a number of ramps.
"We’re going to start on it on April 8 at 9 a.m. by closing down Highway 5 east and then any of the ramps connected to Highway 5 east will also be closed with that," said Aeikens.
Starting Wednesday, the roadway will close between Interstate 494 in Bloomington and Davern Street in St. Paul. The detour for Terminal 1 traffic is Highway 77 to Highway 62, back to Highway 5. Drivers can also take I-494 and I-35E to get around the closure.
