WWII veteran honored at high school band concert, as band plays song he composed

Champlin high school’s band honored men and women who served in World War Two, Tuesday night.

"The men and women that served during times of war and peace were there for one country and that is what our hope is tonight, for our community to reestablish that sense that we’re all in this together, we are here for one another," said Band Director Steven Lyons.

One of the pieces the band played was written by 98-year-old Alan Sweet. Sweet was there for the performance and was recognized for his service.

"I didn’t start composing until my late 80’s," Sweet said.

In the last 10 years, the trombone player has been busy. "I have 9 compositions at this point published and I have about 3 more that I haven’t submitted yet," Sweet said.

"I was 19 when I enlisted. There aren’t many of us left. It was 3 years of my life cut out, but you thank God you survived," Sweet said.

On this 80th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, a concert highlighting his musical talent, while also honoring his military service is humbling.

Sweet asked that tonight’s performance be recorded and plans on submitting it for publishing.
