Minnesota State Patrol says at 2:47 a.m. the driver of a Ford Fusion entered the highway driving southbound in the northbound lanes.

The driver of a Lexus traveling north on I-35 approaching Crystal Lake Road was struck head-on by the Fusion, causing the Fusion to roll into the shoulder coming to rest on its roof.

Austin John Grosam, a 20-year-old from Mankato, the man who was driving the Ford Fusion, fled the scene on foot and ran into the southbound lanes of I-35.

An oncoming semi-truck was unable to avoid him and the 20-year-old was struck and killed. Authorities say that two more vehicles were involved in the crash when they also hit the man in the road.

A 27-year-old Burnsville man, who was driving the Lexus, was taken to Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis with life-threatening injuries.

It is unclear if alcohol was a factor in the crash.
