Woman dead, suspect in custody after standoff in Red Wing

Officials say a woman was found dead inside a home where police negotiated with an armed man for hours Sunday night in Red Wing.

According to the Red Wing Police Department, officers initially responded to reports of a suicidal man with a handgun on the 1000 block of Putnam Avenue.

Police said officers first responded around 6 p.m. and took the suspect into custody around 8:30 p.m. He was identified early Monday afternoon as 41-year-old Darryl Dion Nixon Jr. of Red Wing.

Jail records show Nixon is being held on a second-degree murder charge.

After the man surrendered to police, officers searched the home and found a deceased woman inside. The circumstances of her death remain unclear.

Neighbor Russ Jobe and his mother live in the same duplex where Nixon was holed up Sunday evening. He said he heard the scene unfold from their unit downstairs.

“I heard one gunshot, and something hit the floor,” Jobe said. “You know, it seemed like something dropped on the floor, and then he started yelling and crying and everything else. And, you know, ‘What did I do?'”

Jobe said he didn’t fully register what happened until police started arriving minutes later.

As of Monday around noon, as police removed the remaining crime tape, Jobe said he was “a bit shooken up,” adding that he had interacted with Nixon and the woman he said also stays in the upstairs residence with him.

“They just seemed real nice. I don’t know what happened,” Jobe said. “If it’s a block or two over, you say, ‘Oh, wow.’ But technically in your own house? It just kind of, like, freezes you on what to do and say.”

The Red Wing Police Department said the woman’s autopsy is currently scheduled for Tuesday, and her identity will be released once it is done, and her family is notified.

Police ask the public to stay away from the area while investigators collect evidence at the scene. Officers add there is no threat to the public, and more details are expected to be released Tuesday when formal charges are filed.
